Forging

If you get it hot enough, steel moves just like clay. Work with fire, hammer, and anvil in a tradition thousands of years old.

Using heat and a hammer to move metal is an art form thousands of years old. In forging we generally deal with iron and steel, though bronze, copper, aluminum, titanium, and other unusual metals can be worked if you have the knowledge. While modern manufacturing has replaced blacksmithing in day to day manufacture, it is still a form of work with deep roots in functionality and toolmaking. Here at ShopSpace we teach both the art and the craft, showing students how to make beautiful pieces while also teaching the basics of making your own tools and equipment, a fundamental skill for any blacksmith.

Our classes start with hooks and leaves, and as they get more advanced we cover forge welding in a coal fire, making pattern welded damascus, tongs, and the science of heat treating as you make your own knives, hammers, hatchets, and hand tools. We’re always adding new classes, and if you come in during open time you’ll see our community making a variety of handcrafted works in the forge.
